    Exercising a Broken Heart

    Exercising a Broken Heart
When my long-term girlfriend and I broke up I thought the pain would never go away; it sat in the pit of my stomach, kept me up at night, killed my appetite and crushed my motivation to go to the gym.

I was paralyzed by depression and anxiety, literally just going through the motions. I spent a lot of time eating crap, drinking, and not putting any real effort into life. It felt easier to sink deeper into my depression rather than try to move on with my life.

On my way to the gym one morning, something snapped inside of me....Read More

You’re Doing it Wrong: Late Night Exercise
Here is a rule to live by: If an exercise product is sold exclusively on television and can usually be seen following an infomercial for Girls Gone Wild, said product DOES NOT WORK.

If it were only as easy as these commercials claim. If it were only as easy as throwing on a pair of Sauna Pants (see below) and watching the weight fall off. If it were only as easy as holding a vibrating dumbbell and watching your biceps become ripped and lean..

This stuff does not work. There's a reason they sell this crap after 2am, you have to be delirious to buy it.

Am I gonna get sued for this?!

Does the Shake Weight work? It depends... If you want to see strong-lean arms, don't rely on the shake weight. If you want to see the fat on your arms jiggle uncontrollably, then the Shake Weight is for you!

Are you kidding me, the EZ Jumper?! Buy a freaking jump rope! If I see you in the gym with these things I am going to point and laugh. Jumping rope is hard and it takes practice, but it is one of the best forms of cardio you can do.  It is worth the work!

This video is hysterical. "Exercise takes FOREVER!" Instead you should try this bullshit product that dehydrates you and sucks your stomach in for you?! If you're overweight, water weight is not the problem.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I might buy this thing just because it's so ridiculous! All jokes aside, your body would get used to this in a heartbeat. To see improvement you need to constantly challenge your body in different ways.

"Sweat where you need it most!" Because belly button, crotch and ass sweat is exactly what you need to lose weight. Well... it kinda is, but you need the sweat you have to work for.

There is no one product that is going to give you amazing abs. The only way to a six-pack is working your ass off in the gym and making good decisions in the kitchen.

    Contralateral Box-Squat and Press
    We all have muscle imbalances.

You're probably sitting in a chair right now. Your shoulders are slumped forward and your neck is slightly bent downward toward the computer screen. You do this often, maybe even everyday.

By sitting in this position, without rolling your shoulders back and sitting up straight, you are creating major muscle imbalances in your upper body. One day you will look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame, mangled teeth and all.  Roll your shoulders back!!!

Ok so I just helped you correct an upper body imbalance (Boom!); let's work on your lower body imbalances.

    Here's a Test
    1. Stick one leg out in the air and stand up from your chair using one leg.
1a. Make sure your shoulders are rolled back and your chest is up and don't let your foot touch the ground!!!
    2. Sit back down (gracefully) with one leg remaining in the air, the other heel planted in the ground.
    3. Do it 5 times on one side then try it with the other leg... Go ahead... I'll wait...

Did you do it? Could you remain balanced on one leg or did the other leg come down? Were both sides equal?

Correcting lower body imbalances is important for both aesthetics (eg. different size legs) and injury prevention (eg. patellofemoral syndrome).

The contralateral box-squat and press is great for correcting lower body imbalances while strengthening your core and upper body. This is a tough exercise but it's well worth the effort!

*NOTE* if you cannot perform a single-leg box-squat do NOT attempt the Contralateral Box-Squat and Press. Before attempting this exercise, practice the single-leg box squat; it does not take very long to master!

    Curls for the Girls

    Curls for the Girls
One of the main reasons women use cardio machines for most of their workout is fear of girth. Well that, and the creepy guy who just won’t stop staring.

How about this for a paradigm shift: not only do you need to build muscle to slim down, you also need to lift HEAVY weights. This goes against the popular belief that to “tone,” (This is a nasty word. Let’s use “lean” from now on.) you need to do high repetitions of lighter weight. I’m not sure where this philosophy came from, but it’s WRONG!...Read More
